Reb Walter doesn't text on shabbos
"Being shomer (expletive) shabbos means taking that which is most precious to me and channeling it towards the big man in the sky." needless to say Walter doesn't text on shabbos, that just ain't how he rolls.

Rav Machlis the ultimate shabbos warrior

During my year in Israel as many other yeshivah guys did, I spent a shabbos lunch at Rabbi Machlis. It was hot and crowded but a joyous shabbos atmosphere. what I remember most about the meal is Rav Machlises having one person from each table give over a teaching (no politics). A young guy from Brazil got up and told the following story. He said that he didn't grow up religious, but he knew about shabbos. He also knew that a person is supposed to do something special in the honor of shabbos. This guy liked to go out and dance in the clubs. He said that when he goes out to dance on Friday night he dances extra specially hard in the honor of shabbos. Me and my buddies were doing a bit of snickering and eye rolling at this guys idea of oneg shabbos, but Rav Machlis had his eyes closed and was swaying intently. He remarked " I've been keeping shabbos for so many years, yet I don't think I have kept shabbos to the degree that you have". The snickering faded, I knew I was far, and I gained much respect for Rav Machlis the ultimate shabbos warrior.
Shabbos fighters unite!
I hope to channel the desperation I felt from reading the Jewish week half shabbos article into something constructive. The Baal Shem Tov once witnessed somebody desecrating shabbos and he was very disturbed. He understood that Kol Hanegaim Adam Roeh Chutz, Menigas Atzmo. That all of the blemishes a person sees external of themselves is really mirroring a deficiency that they possess. The Baal Shem realized that he had once heard somebody making fun of a tzadik who is bechinas shabbos and he kept quiet which was tantamount to his own chilul shabbos. Understandably my negative association with the half shabbos article is a reflection of my own half shabbos and I hope this blog will serve as an inspiration to myself and others who are striving to make half shabbos into full shabbos! Please feel free to become a contributor of stories, photos, or full shabbos themed torah and ideas!
